The project:

'Arborescent' is a series of projects inspired by the work of highly influential architect and composer, Iannis Xenakis (1922-2001).

Xenakis' practice was inherently multi-disciplinary, working on the principle that an artistic expression can be realised mathematically in any artistic medium. He represented his ideas through drawings (referring to them to as 'arborescences'), which he famously used as non-traditional, graphical scores for orchestral recital.

After working with architect Le Corbusier in designing the ground-breaking Philips Pavilion for the 1958 World's Fair in Brussels, Xenakis later developed the UPIC system, an influential computer-music device, which translated his graphical scores into electronic sounds.

Taking inspiration from Xenakis' creative approach, 'Arborescent_01' involved commissioning three new graphical scores by practitioners who explore the boundaries of visual art, architecture, and composition: sound-toy and graphic designer Paul Farrington (Studio Tonne), architects Amenity Space, and composer Leafcutter John.

This theme has subsequently been developed through collaborative projects by Ed Carter and Joey Scully.
